How laser tattoo removal treatment works

Tattoo ink is injected in large molecules under the skin when you have your tattoo. These ink particles are too large for the body to break down and absorb naturally. Our tattoo removal laser treatment targets the ink under your skin specifically and produces a photo-acoustic shock wave that breaks up the ink into smaller particles. These ink particles can then be broken down and removed by the body's immune and lymphatic system. As the laser targets the ink, there is very little other effects to the skin.

Frequently asked questions

What are the side effects of tattoo removal treatment?

Overall, tattoo removal treatment is gentle and mild, causing only slight discomfort with minimal side effects. You may have some pin-point bleeding to the area. This is a normal part of the treatment and is not dangerous in any way.

How many tattoo removal treatments are required?

The number of required tattoo removal treatments is dependent on several factors, including depth of ink penetration, age of the tattoo and colour intensity, that is, lighter versus darker colours. However, most people need five to six treatments and begin seeing results after only one or two sessions.

Is any recovery time needed between tattoo removal treatment sessions?

Although laser tattoo removal treatment sessions are scheduled approximately four to six weeks apart, no rest or recuperation time is required after each visit. You will immediately be able to resume normal activities without restriction.

What types of tattoo can be removed?

While certain pigments and inks are harder to erase than others, the majority of colours can be removed, including black, blue, green, brown and even red.

Tattoo Removal Aftercare Instructions

The tattoo removal laser treatment may create a superficial burn wound. Some clients may experience, bruising or swelling. There is immediate whitening of the treated area, which usually lasts for several minutes.

  1. Many clients then develop blisters, crusts, or scabs within 12-72 hours, which may last for 1-2 weeks or sometimes longer .The treated areas may be pink or pale after the scab separates. Loss of skin pigment in the treated area is common, and is usually temporary. Healing is usually complete by 5-8 weeks.
  2. Keep the treated area clean and dry while it is healing. Clean the area gently with soap and water and then gently pat the area dry. You should apply a thin coating of antibiotic ointment (Sudocrem) up to three times a day while the area is healing if you keep the area covered with a sterile dressing.
  3. You may apply cool compresses as necessary for 24 hours after the laser treatment to help reduce discomfort and inflammation. You may take plain Tylenol, but avoid aspirin (it can increase the risk of bruising and/or bleeding.)
  4. Do not pick at the scab or allow the skin to become scraped, as this may result in infection and scarring. Shaving should be avoided in the treated area until it is completely healed.
  5. Do not wear makeup or any cream or medication unless recommended by our office for 48 hours.
  6. Wear a sun block with an SPF of 50 or higher over the area for 3 months following the treatment.
  7. If the area looks infected (honey coloured crusting and oozing or spreading redness), if you experience an unusual discomfort or constant bleeding, if any other complications develop, or if you have any questions or concerns, contact the office immediately. Of course, if you have any extreme reaction (such as moderate to severe facial swelling, moderate to severe rash, any difficulty breathing, or you are in any distress) call your GP and go to the emergency department.
